Our Workforce, Our Future

The Workforce Development Council of Seattle-King County sponsors employment and training programs that build a skilled, job-ready workforce for our region. When workers have the skills that industry wants to employ, our local economy grows and our residents prosper. We carefully select, fund, and manage programs that meet this critical community need.

And the WDC not only responds to today’s economic challenges, but tomorrow’s. We research emerging population and business trends. We convene leaders from industry, education, labor, and government to develop solutions. We seize new opportunities to keep our workers and businesses competitive.

Here are some of the innovative workforce programs we sponsor and the people they serve:

Self-Sufficiency for Low-Income Workers

Our programs support career advancement and wage progression for low-income workers, helping them achieve self-sufficiency and move on towards prosperity. An innovative new tool developed by the WDC, called the Self-Sufficiency Calculator, is used to set income goals and measure progress towards the self-sufficiency mark.

Another key program, Healthcare Career Pathways. puts counselors on-site at local hospitals to provide employees with career planning services and access to training funds. .

Workforce Planning for a Strong Economy

The foundation of a vibrant economy is a workforce equipped with the skills that industry needs. The WDC monitors these needs annually by meeting with industry leaders and analyzing emerging workforce trends and skill gaps. From this critical research, programs are developed that effectively link job seekers to high demand jobs in growth sectors as well as provide access to life-long learning opportunities.

Employment and Education for At-Risk Youth

Youth employment has a positive impact on high-school graduation rates, college enrollment, and long-term earnings. Our Youth@Work program connects young adults under age 25 with employers looking for enthusiastic, hard-working employees through our website, www.youthatwork.info.

The WDC’s In-School Youth programs focus on keeping at-risk in-school youth in school and on path to graduate while Out-of-School programs re-engage youth through credit retrieval, GED classses, and occupational skills training.

Job Training and Support for Homeless Individuals

The WDC provides employment services, job training and intensive support to more than 350 homeless men and women each year through our partnerships with local service providers. For almost two decades, the Homeless Intervention Project has been highly effective in helping homeless people to become employed and work toward greater stability in housing and earning.

The Workforce Development Council funds a broad spectrum of programs serving diverse population groups. Through one donation to the WDC, you support these programs throughout our community with the assurance of top-quality services, sound fiscal management and proven results.
